Credit Transfer, RPL Policies & Procedures
Recognition Processes
Ignite Education offers assessment processes that enable recognition of competencies currently held, regardless of how, when or where the learning occurred. These are detailed below:
Recognition of Prior Learning
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment process that involves making a judgment on the skills and knowledge an individual has as a result of past study and/or experience. The aim of RPL is to recognise your existing competencies without having to go through the complete processes of training and assessment. You will still need to provide evidence though, upon which your assessor can base their judgement. Evidence must be:
- Authentic – it must be your own work
- Sufficient – it must demonstrate competence over a period of time, that the competencies can be repeated, and the evidence must be enough so that the assessor can make an accurate judgement regarding competency
- Current – it must demonstrate up-to-date knowledge and skills i.e. from the present or the very-recent past
- Valid – it must be relevant to what is being assessed
You may be eligible to apply for RPL on one or more Units of Competency in your course and this will be discussed at enrolment.
RPL Procedure
- Ignite Education may not apply any cut-off period for credit transfer.
- There are however competency units and licences where assessment has a fixed period of validity for regulatory purposes. Recognition processes must not be used in a way that apparently extends this period of validity without further assessment.
- Applicant indicates their decision to apply for RPL as soon as possible
- Applicant decides which units of competency they wish to RPL
- Applicant reads the RPL policy and procedures contained in the student handbook
- Applicant completes enrolment form and indicates RPL will be sought
- Administration receives enrolment form and records enrolment of student
- Trainer/Assessor or administration officer provides the student with a RPL application form and other RPL information as necessary
- Student completes RPL application and forward to Trainer/Assessor along with any supporting evidence/documents.
- Trainer Assessor arranges interview student to commence RPL assessment process
- Student provides evidence of skills, knowledge, competence for assessment to Trainer/Assessor at interview. Evidence may include but not be limited to:
- Written.
- Verbal.
- Demonstration.
- Third party testimonials.
- Trainer/Assessor assesses student’s evidence against unit(s) requirements and records outcomes.
- Trainer/Assessor provides feedback to student on RPL assessment outcome.
- Trainer/Assessor records result on RPL Assessment/Result Sheet and returns completed RPL Assessment/Result Sheet and supporting evidence to Administration
- RPL results are recorded on the data management system by administration officer
- RPL application and evidence filed as per record management policy and procedures by administration officer
- Administration officer issues a Statement of Attainment/s to the student which has been signed and checked by the GENERAL MANAGER
- Should RPL not be granted students may submit a written appeal to the GENERAL MANAGER within 7 days of receiving their final result (refer to Academic Appeals Policy and Procedure)
Recognition of Current Competencies
Recognition of Current Competencies is a recognition process similar to RPL. It applies if a student has “…previously successfully completed the requirements for a unit of competency…and is now required to be reassessed to ensure the competence is being maintained”.

Credit transfer may be applied to Units of Competency and related qualifications that have been studied in the past. To apply for a direct credit transfer you will need to supply a certified copy your documentation (certificates and/or statements). For full details on the requirements for credit transfer applications, please contact Ignite Education Admin via email: admin@ignite.edu.au
Credit Transfer Procedure
Under the principles of National Recognition, a student is granted an automatic credit for any unit that they successfully completed at any other Registered Training Organisation (RTO):
- When the unit has exactly the same code and title, even if it is not from the same Training Package.
- When the unit has been reviewed and this has resulted in minor changes to the unit code or title eg. A code to B code. This indicates that the outcomes of the unit have remained substantially the same and there is at least 80% commonality with the original unit.
- When the unit has been transferred from another Training Package/curriculum and recoded, however the learning outcomes remain the same.
- Applicant indicates their decision to apply for Credit Transfer as soon as possible
- Applicant decides which units of competency for which they wish to apply for Credit Transfer
- Applicant reads the Credit Transfer policy and procedures contained in the Student Handbook
- Applicant completes enrolment form and indicates Credit Transfer will be sought

- Trainer/Assessor grants Credit Transfer (refer to circumstances under which credit transfer may be granted listed above) and seeks acknowledgement from student (where required)
